Mužlja

Updated: Dec 5, 2023

Mužlja is located in the Middle Banat district, in the province of Vojvodina, in the Republic of Serbia. It is XIV. the local community of the City of Zrenjanin.

It is located on the right side of the Begeja River, 5 km from the center of Zrenjanin, on a territory of 450 ha, at an average altitude of 78 m. In 2023, Mužlja celebrates 130 years of existence.

After the Austro-Hungarian-Turkish war, this area remained sparsely populated amid war destruction and epidemics. The melioration of the old stream of Begej created the conditions for agricultural management. The state treasury owned the land and was administered by the Ministry of Agriculture in Budapest. This land was leased to ranchers for decades, who kept large herds of cattle and sheep grazing here.

The first settlers of Mužlje arrived on the field in the summer of 1890. Here they came across a wasteland, where there was nothing but weeds and bushes. But that's why the whole area was divided into parcels with Austro-Hungarian precision, and plots for the construction of schools, churches, and municipal houses were also drawn.

On Saturday, July 1, 2023, members of the Association of Family Farms "Cluster Fokus", civil organizations, and the Mužlja Local Community Council organized the 40th jubilee event "Harvest Days" in the wheat field, which is located near Sunča Jezero.

The aim of the event is to continue the decades-long tradition, to express gratitude for the daily bread, and to pass on harvest customs to future generations as faithfully as possible.
